第一天，他精神饱满，拿起锄头就开始挖，不管炎热的天气，只是一个劲儿地努力挖。可是第二天，第三天，一天天过去，连一点水的影子都没有见到。到了第十六天，天气格外地热，毒辣的太阳肆意灼烧着大地，空气像翻滚的热浪。男人身上湿淋淋的，虽然他挖的井深足以把自己装下了，但他盼望以久的水始终没有出现。男人头上的汗，如雨滴般哗哗地往下流淌。他喘着粗气，望着已被锄头划出血的双手，和被磨破的布鞋，彻底失去了希望。那天傍晚，男人收拾简单的行李走出家门，准备离开这个地方。一位老者从黑暗中缓缓走了出来：你真的就这样放弃了吗？原来，这位老者目睹了他掘井的整个过程。

第二天，一个少年来到了枯井旁，他也遇到了这个老者。老者看了看他说：少年啊，你想试试挖这口井吗？少年迟疑了一下，心想，之前那个男人那么努力都未能成功，我能行吗？老者见他很矛盾，微笑着递给他一把锄头，说道：不管怎样，试试吧。于是，少年鼓起勇气，用力地向下挖了几下，随着“哗”的一声，一股清泉顿时喷涌而出，差点溢出井口。少年看到这个场景，无比快乐，叫来镇上的所有人，用泉水为大家解渴。以前那个男人听说后，懊悔不已。镇上的人就靠着这口井，度过了旱灾。
