龙兴塔是绛州的标志性建筑，位于新绛龙兴寺内。据记载此塔建于唐朝贞观年间，原高八层，清乾隆四十二年（公元1777年）因年外塔圮，重修时包镶外皮，增高为十三层，塔呈八角形，通高43。7米。此塔为古城的独特标志，故亦称“绛州宝塔”。古塔之所以出名主要是宝塔腾烟这一奇观至今令人迷惑不解。据新绛县志记载，龙兴宝塔曾六次腾烟：光绪元年、1937年、1971年、1976年、1993年。据1941年《重修新绛龙兴寺碑记》记载，光绪元年（公元1875年）曾“塔顶腾烟，青云直上，为发达科名之征兆”。1971年中秋节，每天近黄昏时分，塔顶升起团缕青烟，盘塔顶环绕，持续约半小时自行消失，距塔三、四百米皆可清晰目睹，重复十余天才止，围观者日不下千人。据新绛县博物馆记载，1993年8月21日至28日连续8天每天近黄昏时分，宝塔又腾烟，持续时间不一，究其原因还有待科学考证。
